By Hecktown Fire Company
July 16, 2015

Fire stations 53 and 50 (Vigilance Hose of Nazareth) and EMS 17 were dispatched to a confined space rescue with HazMat at 614 Gremar Road on 7/16/15 at 14:15 hours. Initial reports indicated a male party unconscious in a concrete pit approximately 10 feet below grade. 5341 (Chief Seip) and 5021 (AC Keenhold) responded and while en-route Lehigh County Special Ops 42 was requested for technical rescue and HazMat. Engines 5012 and 1411 (Nancy Run of Bethlehem Township) were also added for man power. 17 EMS arrived and confirmed the dispatch of a patient in the pit with chemical exposure. 5341 and 5021 arrived and the decision was made for crews to make entry based on information gathered at the scene. Crews from 50, 53, and EMS 17 were able to remove the patient from the pit and immediately began decontamination operations. A total of 4 employees were decontaminated and transported to a local hospital.

The incident then transitioned to a HazMat with Stations 42 (Lehigh County) and 10 (City of Bethlehem) conducting monitoring and testing at the scene. Crews made entry to the area and after their evaluation of the scene it was deemed safe to turn over to a clean-up company. Units from Northampton County EMA provided technical assistance and logistical support. EMS 46 (East Allen Township) provided rehab services and Fire 54 (Upper Nazareth) provided stand by coverage during the incident.
